Step-by-step protocols

Applying and removing UV hair extensions:
the step-by-step protocol

Master every step of the EHE LIGHT™ system, from the first bond to a perfect removal.

The ritual at a glance

Applying UV hair extensions
in five steps

01

Prepare the hair

Wash the hair with a gentle sulphate-free shampoo, rinse it thoroughly and dry it completely. Do not apply conditioner, mask, oil or any other product after washing. For a proper bond with EHE LIGHT™, the hair must be clean, dry and free of residue.

02

Position the strand

Place the extension strand on the client’s hair. The product’s initial tack holds the strand in place and lets you adjust the position precisely before curing.

03

Apply the adhesive

With the precision dropper, place one drop of EHE LIGHT™ UV adhesive directly on the section of natural hair where the bond will be made, 1 to 1.5 cm from the scalp.

04

Spread the adhesive

With the brush included in the EHE LIGHT™ kit, spread the adhesive from top to bottom over the whole join between the natural hair and the extension, without getting any on the scalp.

05

Cure on both sides

Cure above and below the join, following the timings, distance and protective measures given in the EHE LIGHT™ instructions: light within 1 cm, 6 to 8 seconds on the top and 6 to 8 seconds on the underside.

Full protocols

Step-by-step protocol:
application and removal

01

Consultation and hair assessment

Before any application, carry out a full assessment of the hair and scalp. Examine the natural density, texture and condition of the client’s hair. Look for areas of scalp sensitivity, active breakage or recent chemical treatments that could affect adhesion or comfort. Agree the result she wants (volume, length or both) and the number of strand-by-strand bonds needed to achieve it naturally.

• Professional tip: EHE LIGHT™ adhesive works best on clean, dry hair free of products. Always ask your clients to arrive with freshly washed, completely dry hair and no conditioner, oil or serum.

02

Section, separate and clear

Start at the nape and work upwards in horizontal sections, row by row, with care. Make a clean, straight horizontal parting about 1 cm above the hairline. Hold all the hair above the section out of the way with clips. The width of each section and the spacing between rows directly determine how invisible the final result is: clean, even sections are the foundation of professional-level work.

• Professional tip: use the EHE LIGHT™ sectioning comb to make perfectly straight horizontal partings. Uneven sections are the most common cause of bonds showing on the scalp.

03

Choose and prepare the extension strand

Choose the extension strand that best matches the colour, texture and weight wanted for the client’s hair. If you are working with adhesive, keratin or sewn-in extensions, cut 2 mm below the keratin, adhesive or stitching to free the individual strands, and make sure the tip of the extension has no silicone coating in the bond area. See the advanced cutting technique described in the Hair compatibility section to get individual strands from a weft.

• Professional tip: match the weight of each extension strand to the density of the natural hair, section by section. Overloading a bond point is the main cause of early lifting and unnecessary tension on the natural hair.

04

Position the extension strand

Lay the prepared extension strand flat on the strand of natural hair, aligning the tip of the extension with the point where the adhesive will be applied. The extension must stay parallel to the natural strand, resting on top like a sandwich. The initial tack of the UV adhesive will hold the extension in place while you make fine alignment adjustments before curing.

05

Apply the EHE LIGHT™ UV adhesive

With the precision dropper, place one small, controlled drop of EHE LIGHT™ UV adhesive on the root section of the extension strands, where the bond will be made. The adhesive should sit about 1 to 1.5 cm from the scalp: close enough to stay invisible, but far enough to avoid any contact with the skin of the scalp. A single drop 2 to 3 mm in diameter is enough for a clean, secure bond.

• Professional tip: less is more. A drop of adhesive that is too large spreads when compressed and shows more. Work on the precision of the drop to get bonds so small they become imperceptible.

06

Spread the adhesive with the EHE LIGHT™ brush

Once the strand is positioned, use the brush included in the EHE LIGHT™ kit to spread the adhesive from top to bottom over the whole join between the natural hair and the extension, without getting any on the scalp. This step is essential: incomplete contact creates weak points in the bond. Even spreading also lets the bond stay flat and thin, and therefore discreet, even in close-up photos.

• Professional tip: a thin, flat bond is an invisible bond. Spread the adhesive evenly with the brush, without building it up in one spot, so that it does not spill over the sides.

07

Cure with UV light: above and below

Place the EHE LIGHT™ UV device directly over the bond, making sure the light opening is within 1 cm of the adhesive. Activate the device for 6 to 8 seconds on the top, then repeat for 6 to 8 seconds on the underside to ensure full curing and a firm bond. A properly cured bond feels firm to the touch and is not tacky as soon as the cycle ends. No additional drying or setting time is needed.

• Professional tip: keep your hand steady throughout both curing cycles. Movement during exposure can leave an edge not fully cured. In cold or humid weather, lengthen the curing time slightly to guarantee full curing.

08

Work section by section and finish the application

Continue strand by strand along the current row, spacing the bonds evenly with about 1 cm of natural hair between each bond point. Once a full row is complete, release the next horizontal section and start the next row about 1 to 1.5 cm above the previous one. For a natural result, the standard approach is to work from the nape upwards, applying rows until you reach the density and length wanted, usually stopping about 5 cm below the crown so the bonds are not visible in buns and ponytails.

• Professional tip: stagger the bonds from one row to the next, like bricks: those in row 2 should sit between those in row 1. This layout stops a row of bonds showing as a distinct horizontal line in the style.

Aftercare

Caring for the bond so it lasts

The EHE LIGHT™ bond is water resistant, but prolonged moisture can soften it over time. A few simple habits, especially during the first days, keep it firm and discreet.

01

The first three days: keep the bonds dry

Although the adhesive is water resistant, it is best to avoid wetting the bonds for 72 hours after application. This period runs from the end of the appointment.

02

Measured washing: two to three times a week

After that, wash the hair two to three times a week. Washing too often exposes the bond to repeated moisture and can soften it over time.

03

Conditioner: from mid-lengths to ends

Apply conditioner and masks from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the roots and the attachment points.

04

Dry roots and bonds thoroughly

After every wash, dry the roots and bonds carefully, first with a towel and then with a hairdryer. Do not let the bonds stay damp for long.

Troubleshooting

Why do extensions come loose a few days after application?

If extensions applied with EHE LIGHT™ come loose after a few days, check four things: how the hair was prepared, how the adhesive was spread, the curing, with the device at the right distance, and how close to the root the extension was applied. A mistake at any of these steps can stop the bond from holding properly.

01

The hair was not perfectly clean and dry

Before application, wash the hair with a gentle sulphate-free shampoo, rinse it thoroughly and dry it completely. Do not apply conditioner, mask, moisturising cream, oil or any other product after washing.

Even if the hair looks clean, these products can leave a film that stops the adhesive from bonding properly. The bond can feel solid at the end of the appointment, then loosen later when brushing or washing.

How to fix it: start the application on hair that is perfectly clean, dry and free of residue. If a product has already been applied after washing, wash, rinse and dry the hair again before applying the extensions.

02

The adhesive was not spread properly

It is not enough to place the adhesive at a single point. It must be spread evenly over the hair that forms the attachment point.

Using the brush supplied in the EHE LIGHT™ kit, spread the adhesive from top to bottom over the whole bond area, making sure it reaches both the natural hair and the extension hair. If it stays concentrated on the surface or in a small area, the bond can have weak spots.

How to fix it: check the spread before curing. Spread the adhesive well over the whole bond area, without building it up in one spot or spreading it onto the scalp.

03

The bond was cured on one side only, or with the device too far away

If you only light the top, the underside may not receive the curing it needs.

Distance matters as much as time. The light only cures adhesive that is close: if the device is held more than 1 cm away, or drifts away during exposure, the bond can feel firm on the surface without being fully cured inside.

How to fix it: cure above and below the attachment point and keep the EHE LIGHT™ device no more than 1 cm from the adhesive throughout the exposure, with a steady hand, without moving it away before the end of the cycle. Follow the timings and the protective measures given in the EHE LIGHT™ instructions and check each bond before continuing.

04

The extension was applied too far from the root

Applying too far from the root leaves more loose hair between the scalp and the attachment point. This can encourage movement and pulling when brushing.

How to fix it: apply the extension close to the root, keeping the gap given for the technique. The bond should let the hair move comfortably, without touching the scalp or creating tension.

To check before you finish the appointment

For a consistent bond with EHE LIGHT™, check the following:

  • The hair was washed with a gentle sulphate-free shampoo and rinsed thoroughly.
  • The hair is completely dry and no product has been applied after washing.
  • The adhesive is spread from top to bottom with the brush supplied in the kit.
  • The bond was cured above and below, with the device no more than 1 cm from the adhesive and following the system instructions.
  • The extension is applied at the right distance from the root and creates no tension.

If extensions come loose after a few days, check these steps before reapplying. Adding more adhesive does not fix poor preparation or incomplete curing. If the problem persists, also check the condition of the adhesive and the device against their documentation and contact EHE LIGHT™ support.
