The short answer: on fine hair, choose extensions with the smallest bond, applied without heat. With UV bonding, each bond point is flat and transparent, sits 1 to 1.5 cm from the scalp and carries 0.5 to 1 g of hair at most. To add volume without changing the length, 80 to 120 bonds are usually enough, as a guide.
If you have fine hair, you have probably had a bad experience: tape that shows along the parting, keratin beads you can feel when you run your hand through your hair, or that pulling sensation at the nape after an application. Fine hair does not rule out extensions. It simply does not forgive mistakes.
Why fine hair is more delicate
Hair is called fine when each strand has a small diameter, and low-density when there are few hairs per centimetre. The two often go together. Either way, the situation is the same: each natural section has less strength to carry weight, and whatever you add has fewer hairs around it to hide in.
That is why three rules are non-negotiable:
- A small bond. The flatter and more discreet it is, the less it shows to the eye and to the touch.
- A proportionate weight. Never more extension hair than the natural section can carry.
- No heat at the root. Weakened fine hair breaks more easily.
Why UV bonding suits fine hair
UV adhesive forms a flat, transparent bond that adapts to the thickness of the section. There is no bead, no tape and no metal ring. And because curing is done with light, in 6 to 8 seconds per side, the root never goes under the 160 to 200°C heated clamp used for keratin. For the full comparison, read UV or keratin extensions.

Where to place them so they do not show
The right distance is 1 to 1.5 cm from the scalp. Any closer and the bond touches the skin, which is uncomfortable and pulls. Any further and it shows when the hair moves. The EHE LIGHT™ protocol divides the head into six zones (temples, crown, nape, sides and so on) because each has a different density and direction of growth.
On fine hair, the parting area and the temples are worked with lighter sections, and a band of natural hair is left untouched around the face. That way you can wear a high ponytail or a bun without anything showing.
How many extensions do I need with fine hair?
| What you want | Indicative number of bonds |
|---|---|
| Volume only, no change in length | 80 to 120 |
| Volume and a little length | 120 to 160 |
| A complete change of length | Up to 200, if your density allows |
Each bond carries 0.5 to 1 g of hair. On fine hair, stay towards the lower end of that range.
A very common mistake is wanting to go from fine, shoulder-length hair to waist-length hair in a single appointment. It can be done, but the result often shows at the ends, because there is far more extension hair than natural hair. It is often prettier to add volume first, then lengthen gradually.

How to care for them at home with fine hair
- Wash with a gentle shampoo and apply the mask only to the lengths and ends, never to the root.
- Brush while holding the hair at the base with your other hand, starting with the ends.
- Dry the root thoroughly before going to bed and tie the hair in a loose plait.
- Do not skip the maintenance appointment every 6 to 8 weeks: as your hair grows, the bonds move down and weigh more.
What if your hair is not straight?
UV bonding can also be used on wavy, curly and coily hair. The key is to choose extension hair of the same texture so that it blends in. You can see the textures the system works with on the hair compatibility page.

To learn more about the method before booking an appointment, start with what UV light hair extensions are, and if budget is a concern, read what drives the price of an application.

Which extensions are best for fine hair?
Those with the smallest bond, applied without heat. UV light bonding leaves a flat, transparent bond point, with no bead, tape or ring, and does not expose the root to heat.
Do UV extensions show on fine hair?
Properly applied, at 1 to 1.5 cm from the scalp and with little weight per section, they are designed to stay discreet to the eye and to the touch, even with a high ponytail.
How many extensions do I need if I have fine hair?
To add volume without changing the length, 80 to 120 bonds of 0.5 to 1 g each are usually enough, as a guide.
Do extensions make fine hair fall out?
What causes breakage or traction hair loss is excess weight, bonds stuck to the scalp and removals done by pulling. With the right technique, it is not inevitable.
Can I wear UV extensions if I have curly or coily hair?
Yes. The system works with all four textures. The key is to choose extension hair of the same texture as yours.
